The Senate is currently debating the SAVE act, under extreme pressure from President Trump to pass it NOW!! This act is highly controversial and at present, Democrats appear to be strongly opposed. Please, please call our two senators and let them know how you feel! The voting rights of Americans is under threat!
What the SAVE Act does
• Requires documentary proof of U.S. citizenship (passport, birth certificate, etc.) to register to vote
• Requires photo ID for voting, including stricter rules for mail ballots
• Requires in-person verification for registration, limiting online/mail registration
• Mandates states to verify voter rolls (including sharing data with federal agencies)
• Allows penalties or lawsuits against election officials who don’t enforce rules
What Trump wants to add
• End most mail-in voting
o Only allow it for limited cases (military, illness, etc.)
• Stronger national voter ID rules
o Including stricter ID requirements for all voters
• Additional non-election provisions
o Restrictions related to transgender athletes and medical care
• Political pressure to pass it
o Has said he may refuse to sign other legislation until this bill passes
Where it stands as of 3/17
• Passed the House
• Now in the Senate and entering debate
• Likely blocked by filibuster (needs 60 votes)
• Unlikely to pass in current form due to strong partisan opposition
• But it reflects a real push to change how voting works nationally.
Right now, the most impactful thing voters can do is:
o make their views known to Senators
o prepare for possible changes
It is critically important that we reach out to our Senators and urge them to vote against this act.
